Birch Plywood

Birch Plywood

Birch Plywood is a quality plywood, that is imported to Melbourne from Russia, Finland or Estonia. It has a variety of uses in furniture making, both interior & exterior, cabinet making, feature walls, and certain parts of boats. Having an A bond glue line, (which is a waterproof bond) makes this plywood very versatile, and all suitable for both interior and semi-exposed exterior applications.

One advantage of Birch Plywood is that it is imperial size in the old terms 8 feet X 4 feet, or as we know it today 2.44 metres X 1.22 metres, that little bit extra can make a huge difference on some projects.

Birch Plywood is manufactured using only Birch veneer so there is no substitution.

Furniture & Birch Plywood FAQs

What is Birch Plywood?

Birch plywood is a type of sheet material that’s manufactured using timber veneers from European baltic birch plantations. Unlike other forms of plywood, birch plywood is known for having multiple lamination layers and almost no spaces or voids, making it a stronger but more lightweight material.

That said, despite it’s raw strength and durability, Birch Plywood is not waterproof and the same can be said for almost all types of Plywood.

Is Austral Multiply Furniture Plywood long-lasting?

We can answer this question in one word: Yes. Austral Multiply Furniture Plywood is a premium furniture grade plywood manufactured using 1.5mm rotary peeled veneers, so it’s definitely a material that’s built to last.

How Is Birch Plywood Made?

Birch plywood is made like any other form of plywood: thin layers of timber veneer that are glued together to create a flat sheet. The key difference is the timber veneers are sourced from European baltic birch plantations.

Can You Paint Birch Plywood?

Thanks to its light and hard veneer, birch plywood takes paint well. So yes, birch plywood can be painted!

Is Birch Plywood Waterproof?

No – birch plywood is not waterproof because the glue used during the manufacturing process is not resistant to moisture.

How Do You Seal Birch Plywood?

Luckily the smooth finish of birch plywood is porous enough to bond easily with epoxy sealer, drying oil, varnish and other sealants. If you want to seal birch plywood, simply:

  • Clean and prepare the panels
  • Apply one to two coats of sealant
  • Leave it to dry for at least 24 hours

The process of sealing birch plywood may differ depending on the type of sealant you’re using, so make sure to read the instructions carefully.

What Is Limewash Birch Plywood Used For?

Limewash birch plywood is exactly the same as birch plywood, except for its sleek white finish. It is a popular choice of material for wall lining, ceilings and furniture construction.
