Tatura Library

Tatura Library Redevelopment and Expansion

The Tatura Library project is a significant undertaking, aimed at revitalising and expanding a key public facility within the greater Shepparton community. This project not only refurbishes the existing library but also introduces a 250m² extension, a new entry, and ancillary facilities. The overarching goal is to enhance the library’s role as a community hub and focal point for local events.

Despite the major challenge of adhering to a restricted budget with earlier concepts estimated at $3.5M. The key design objective was to project the library onto the street, increasing its visibility and engagement with the public space. This approach not only elevates the library’s profile in the community but also contributes to the activation of the surrounding area. The project also addresses the need for a distinct and welcoming entrance for the Kyabram P-12 College, which previously lacked a clear community-facing aspect.

The innovative design solution involved a slender box extension with a projecting roof and a cantilevered slab. This design not only preserved the existing green space but also enhanced the library’s street presence, all while maintaining access routes for other site users.

Cabinet Timbers played a pivotal role in this redevelopment. The client selected our Prefinished Natural Lime Hoop Ply for its ability to seamlessly blend with both the interior and exterior aspects of the library. This choice was instrumental in complementing the modern refurbishment, adding a touch of elegance and continuity to the Tatura library’s design.

Specifically, the natural lime finish gives the wooden material a sleek and contemporary appeal. Better yet, the prefinished material is known for its durability and low maintenance. The prefinished surface adds an extra layer of protection, making it more resistant to wear and tear, scratches, and dents, which is ideal for high-traffic areas. This coincides with Hoop Pine’s minimal maintenance. It’s easier to clean and less likely to stain, which is particularly beneficial in settings like libraries, where the material might be subject to frequent use and handling.
